Course Overview

Welcome

(7 minutes)

Hey, I’m Sam and I am really passionate about encouraging you to think about the human factors that are directly related to the situations that you will be going through in your life right now. This course will be very different to the ones you may have taken before – it’s certainly not just a box-ticking exercise.

Meet George and Elizabeth

(40 minutes)

In this activity you will meet our two characters who will give you a glimpse into their personal and work lives. You’ll listen to them and then answer a few questions about what you observe is going on for them in their lives.

Ā

Human Factors and You

(10 minutes)

Now it’s your turn to consider the situations you’re going through (at work and home) and consider the human factors you're experiencing.

You’ll have the opportunity to think about how these might be affecting you too.

Ā

Positive Influence

(10 minutes)

I love this quite simple model. Deciding what we can have control or influence over in our lives is so important to avoiding potential overwhelm and burnout. This will be practical again and I’ll give you the opportunity to work through this for yourself for a few minutes.

Beliefs, Behaviours and Outcomes

(14 minutes)

All behaviour makes sense in context.

We'll link this to the reality of how human factors can negatively influence behaviour too and what we can do to address this.

The Dirty Dozen

(75 minutes)

These short topics cover each of the Dirty Dozen Human Factors that affect us at some time or another. The format of these lessons cover the general definition and then three top tips to help you manage them when you’re affected by them.Ā

Ā

Stay under the Umbrella!

(9 minutes)

I’m not superstitious, which is probably why I’m comfortable putting an umbrella up in doors! However, I really wanted to drive home a point that affects all of us and the only way I could figure out how to do this was with an umbrella – I won’t tell you more, you’ll have to join me in the course to see what this is all about.

Are you Drifting?

(7 minutes)

In this lesson I’ll go through a very practical model of what happens in our places of work and what we can do to consciously be aware of this drift.Ā We’ll talk about theĀ true intent behind the Occurrence Reporting process and the mindset we need to have to ensure continued safety.Ā

Ā

That was Darn Close!

(40 minutes)

Hear fromĀ four different peopleĀ and then have the opportunity to carry out a mini investigation identifying the potential underlying contributory causes.
Gain an insight into what goes on behind the scenes when something goes wrong, as well as to identify some important lessons we can learn.

Make a Personal Difference

(14 minutes)

Here we will look at everything we’ve covered and learnt, and I’ll encourage you to look at what lies beneath the human factors you are experiencing today.

You'll have the opportunity to discover the (potential) root cause behind a human factor you may be experiencing and identify actions you can take, now, to minimise it's negative potential.

Ā

Personal Minimums

(9 minutes)

In this video I’ll go through a little initiative that I was introduced to when I took my license, Maintenance Personal Minimums.

I’m convinced that these series of questions can significantly reduce the likelihood for incidents and accidents in our industry.Ā

What value did you take away from the course?

Edwin: April 26

It was a very interesting HF course with nice topics.
It is always good to realize that you could only affect your own circle of influence and deal with that and leave the other stuff behind.
Thanks for this training.

Alex: March 26

The work book is a new concept to me.
This makes the course more interactive.

Gary: March 26

I have never done human factors on line before it has always been classroom based, but i have enjoyed it and been impressed how the subject was approached and look forward to trying out some of your examples in a working environment.
